When is Daughters Day?

To answer the question "when is daughters day?" we may first need to start with the question "what is daughters day?" The answer to both is certainly unclear.

If you're like me, you first heard of daughters day when one of your friends posted something about their little angel on Facebook for the occasion. Then, others followed the model with their own posts. Still others, wracked with guilt, wished their daughters a belated daughters day. But when was it?



It appears that "National Son's and Daughter's Day" is a fairly legitimate annual celebration that you've never heard of, in so much as it has an official date- August 11th. But this isn't what your friends are posting about, is it? I've seen no mention of sons. No, this phenomenon seems to be exclusively geared towards only those offspring associated with sugar and spice.

According to whatnationaldayisit.com on a webpage that looks thrown together in just a couple of minutes, National Daughters Day was Sept 25th. But this is only based on the fact that this was the day it was mentioned the most on Twitter. It certainly doesn't seem like this is an established method for creating a national holiday.

And finally, I found this bizarre website that describes Daughters Day in the U.S. as a time when:

To bring this smile on their daughter’s face, parents bestow gifts, select items, chocolates, fresh flowers, dresses, jewellery and lot others. Parties are planned. Activities are chalked out. 

Ya, I don't think any of that is true, and the broken English certainly doesn't instill any additional confidence in me that this holiday has any level of legitimacy.

So near as I can discern, Daughters Day is not really a thing. Except that one day in September of 2015, someone declared it, and the whole thing went viral. And you know, that's not so bad. People spontaneously recognizing their love and appreciation of their daughters can certainly bring no harm to this world. I don't have a daughter, but if I did I'm sure that seeing all the posts about Daughters Day would certainly have made me take a moment to appreciate my own little embodiment of everything nice.
